Lhasa had been designated as the capital of Tibet by the 9th century AD.

It served as the national religious centre of Tibet, and much of its population was composed of Buddhist monks and laymen.

Although Lhasa and Tibet came under Chinese occupation in 1951, the city and the country remained under the Tibetan government until 1959, when direct Chinese administration was imposed.

U P D A T E

My Thought: I have this idea of building a website on travel in Tibet for a long time and it was done finally! Travel is my no.1 hobby but unfortunately, I have never been to Tibet and I hope to do this in the near future. So at the moment, I can only pull off information from various websites. My sole purpose of building this website is to let more people know about this beautiful land. I will update this site as often as I can and please email me for any suggestion. My next plan is to build a forum for you guys so remeber to come back and check it out! My long term project is to build sections on Moscow, Argentina etc...Whoever wants to help me is very welcomed. Thanks and don't forget to sign my guest book at the bottom of this page! Your support means a lot to me! ^..^,

Tibet, provincial-level administrative area of China, in the southwestern part of the country. Officially Tibet (Chinese Xizang) Autonomous Region, it is bounded on the north by Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai Province; on the east by Sichuan and Yunnan provinces; on the south by Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), India, Bhutan, and Nepal; and on the west by India. Tibet is the highest region on earth, having an average elevation of more than 4875 m (more than 16,000 ft); for this reason it is sometimes called the Roof of the World. It is also one of the world's most isolated regions, surrounded on three sides by vast mountain systems, namely the Himalayas on the south, the Karakorum Range on the west, and the Kunlun Mountains on the north.

Lhasa

Lhasa, the heart and soul of Tibet and an object of devout pilgrimage, is still a city of wonders.

Potala Palace

The Potala, a vast white and ochre fortress, dominates the Lhasa skyline. It serves as a symbolic focus for Tibetan aspirations.

Jokhang Temple

Today, it is the Jokhang temple, 2km to the east, which is the spiritual heart of the city.

Mt Kailash

Soaring above 22,000 feet, the mountain is the supremely sacred site of four religions and billions of people.

Transport can be a major hurdle if you want to explore the backwaters. the main types of vehicle are bus, minibus, truck and 4WD. So called public 'pilgrim buses' to monastery attractions have become more widespread in recent years, but are generally restricted to the major monastic sites in the Lhasa region.
